Marietta Robusti (b. 1554-1559) was the daughter of Venetian school painter Tintoretto. Marietta, herself, was a painter and collaborated in her father’s workshop.

European kings and emperors wanted to host her as a court painter, but her father refused both proposals. Carlo Ridolfi (b. 1594-1658) stated that she had the same skill as her father while displaying “sentimental femininity, a womanly grace that is strained and resolute”. Marietta died giving birth when she was thirty years old. The only painting attributed to her is her ‘Self-portrait’.  

Here, more than six centuries later, the ‘Self-portrait’ of Marietta is distorted through various processes. The artist has distorted an image of the portrait with organic materials, such as flowers, grass, and soil. The distorted image was scanned and then printed, repeating the process ten times. 

The distorted self-portrait serves as a reminder of the omission and dissolution of Marietta’s artistic work.

Astrid Blazsek-Ayala is an economist and artist from Guatemala. She has a PhD in Economics from the University of Navarre, Spain (2010). She holds a degree in Advanced Studies in Photography and Management of Photographic Projects from La Fototeca and the University of San Carlos de Guatemala (2016). 

In 2020, she presented her exhibition ‘Mythological imaginings’ in the Head On Photo Festival (Australia) and Antigua Tipografía Sánchez & De Guise (Guatemala). In her recent work, Polyphony, she explores the contributions of woman artists through history and underlying values in mythologies.
