Looking Backwards, Gazing Forwards: A Survey of the Embroidered Photographs of Patricia Casey The art of Patricia Casey is primarily located within photography, however, since 2008, Casey has also used mixed media, predominantly embroidery and crochet to make works combining high end digital technology and old world craft skills. While this may seem to be a strange marriage of materials it sits well with Casey’s ongoing conceptual concerns and research into memory, imagination and dreaming. Her last three bodies of work Slippage in 2009, Scented Gardens for the Blind, 2010 and Elsewhere, 2012 and her forthcoming work, Little Secrets have seen a period of much experimentation with materials and photographic methodology. Looking Backwards, Gazing Forwards is a survey of her embroidered photographic works that gives a taste of what has been and a hint at what is to come.
Winner of the HeadOn Photographic Portrait Prize in 2006, Patricia Casey has been a practicing artist since 1999 and has exhibited in group and solo exhibitions during this time. She completed her Master of Visual Arts (Research) degree in 2009 and Master of Studio Arts in 2006 at the University of Sydney. Patricia was a finalist in the National Photography Prize in 2010 and also in the Sir John Sulman Prize at the Art Gallery of NSW in 2002 and 2005. In 2002 she was also selected for the public art exhibition, “Sydney Looking Forward” as part of Art and About. She has received a number of awards and her work has been exhibited overseas in China, Korea, France, England and America. Patricia’s work has also been shown, in regional and interstate galleries, including the Queensland Centre for Photography and the Perth Centre for Photography. She is currently represented by NG Art in Sydney.
