Bernadette Smith draws on photographs taken during her Carss Park Artist Residency to explore relationships between migration, colonialism and the environment. Reflecting on her identity as the child of a migrant and a fourth-generation settler, she presents a visual and philosophical meditation on changes wrought by settlers to the land and its First Nations people.

Bernadette Smith is a photo-media artist based in Sydney. She has exhibited internationally with solo shows in Berlin, San Francisco and Singapore and has been a finalist in several major art prizes. Informed by her background in activism, her photography blends fine art and documentary approaches to raise awareness of environmental and social justice.
