‘Characters of Coolah’ is a selection of environmental portraits produced during Easter 2018 in and around the town of Coolah NSW. Coolah is small town of about 1,000 people in the central western part of New South Wales, Australia in Warrumbungle Shire. The northeastern side of the area is in the Liverpool Range with the Coolah Tops National Park. Most of the region is agricultural with sheep and cattle raising and crops grown along the Talbragar River and Coolaburragundy River valleys. The environmental portraits by Allan Coker capture the people and characters of Coolah going about their everyday lives. The portraits feature people from this rural community; a farmer, two shearers, a horseman, a station hand, the local ambo, the publican, the patchwork lady and the local doctor, among others. They are not celebs, they have no fame but each has an interesting life history and association with the town and each has made a positive contribution to the rural, social and business life of this community. These photographs celebrate these ‘ordinary’ people photographed in some of their most favourite places.

Allan Coker
Allan has been a keen amateur photographer for many years. His initial interest came about as a consequence of extensive travels with his camera focussed on places and landscapes. However, his more recent work has focussed on photojournalism, sport and environmental portraiture.
Allan has exhibited successfully in both national and international exhibitions and in 2012 at Aurora Place in the Sydney CBD as part of the Head On festival. He regularly judges and presents on subjects, including photojournalism, black and white print making, the use of off-camera flash and photoshop.
