HEAD ON at 107 is BACK and it is LIVE!  We are excited to announce a new group of artists, two of which have shown in this portal before. This popular Head On exhibition features photography in its endless diversity. Each artist tells a unique story employing different agendas and a range of photographic styles.

The artists are CHRISTINE ANSORGE, KATE BALLIS, ALLAN COKER, FRANCIS MINIEN, NATALIA MROZ, SUZAN PEKTAS, FIONA RUCK and KELLY SLATER. Accompanying in the Theatre Space is JIM ANDERSON.

Christine Ansorge in Nonagenerian presents direct portraits of older Australians challenging negative perceptions of ageing.

In Kate Ballis’ Liminality she ‘candy-coats’ Californian landscapes employing infrared light emitted by plants via the photosynthesis process to make the desert a fascinating subject in moody reds and blacks.

Faces of India by Allan Coker connects us with the people of India. People yield through their gaze into his lens giving striking insight into their lives.

Francis Minien in Abstractual takes unenhanced everyday objects from our daily life that we often do not notice – a curtain, a wall, a vase – the actual – and makes us see them with fresh eyes.

Natalia Mroz’ Pilgrimage explores Orthodox Christian practices in Ethiopia, Africa. This rarely portrayed country is modernising rapidly yet ancient spiritual practices remain strong.

Suzan Pektas Dreams of the Black Sea takes us to Turkey. She was raised on The Black Sea coast and has drawn from this background an engaging cinematic narrative of engaging beauty.

Fiona Ruck with The Agony and the Ecstasy presents a fresh look at sports photography making the body in sport look more like dancers the Australian Ballet than footy blokes Australian Rules.

In Unplaced Kelly Slater poses visual proof that monoculture plantation forests displace and replace the stamp of native species that once dominated the landscapes of New Zealand and Australia.

These 8 works by 8 artists are just the surface of a larger story, one that has drawn the photographer to it for passionate personal reasons. Read the Artist Statement before or after looking at the images and the full story will be revealed. The accompanying Artists Biography describes each artist’s background and experience.

We hope that these fresh works will delight, intrigue and impress. To produce a series requires a passion for the subject matter and the determination to make the work. This is proof that Photography is the perfect storytelling medium.

Artists: Allan Coker, Christine Ansorge, Fiona Ruck, Francis Minien, Kate Ballis, Kelly Slater, Natalia Mroz, Suzan Pektas.
