Emma Hack is an Australian artist known for her photographs of naked painted human bodies that merge with patterned backgrounds, producing a chameleon-like camouflage effect. Her technique received world-wide exposure in the music video ‘Somebody that I used to know’, by Gotye – which attracted 957 million YouTube views.
Hack presents two series for the Head On Photo Festival; the first, ‘Flight of Fancy’, features the artist’s muse surrounded by floating flowers, suspended in voluminous colour and layers of distortion. Her models cradle live birds within fantastical settings, that are set-builds rather than painted backgrounds, featuring flowers and natural plant life.
Her second series of images, ‘Geometric’, creates a spatial difference between model and background, capturing poses that contort and evolve the human form and its surrounding space. The structured geometric backgrounds, juxtaposed against the flowing curves of folded torsos, arms and legs, create a structural interest to the eye, while the model or subject still appears ‘at one’ with its surrounds.
“Although my work is perceived initially as photographic, I prefer it to be viewed as a painterly installation that is then captured photographically. I choose not to Photoshop my work extensively, rather letting the work ‘breathe’ as a representation of what was visualised on the day of creation…” (Emma Hack, 2018)
