In 2020, COVID-19 forced us to explore new photography methods.
I began to connect with people via FaceTime and photographed them through the monitor with my digital camera. Although the quality was low, it resonated with the uncertainty and imperfections of that challenging time. This unique approach completely pulled me in, and I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I felt a powerful closeness through the lens despite their physical absence.
In 2022, I revisited the project, using apps that allowed me to use my subjects’ phone cameras. The image quality doesn’t depend on internet connections.
During shoots, I ponder the natural movements and perspectives I usually take for granted. I wonder if my subjects feel less exposed and if the intimacy of being alone alters their emotional availability.
Additionally, I contemplate how my perception shifts when confined to a phone screen. Remote photography reshapes the narrative of our art – what if presence is no longer a prerequisite to seeing and listening?
This exploration fascinates me, and I aspire to capture families intimately worldwide.
