Inspired by British pop artist Allen Jones, and the use of fetish in fashion, anti-fashion and popular culture from the 1970s onwards, John Dobson explores fetish and its representation in this photographic series.

A dictionary definition describes Fetish as an obsession for a piece of clothing or a part of the body. Each of these photographs features an article of fetish apparel highlighting the photographer’s obsession with the skin-tight fit and shiny texture of leather, latex and PVC. The clothing is the subject, the wearer an anonymous clotheshorse whose function is simply to give the subject shape and form.

Born in Melbourne, Australia, after graduating from Frankfurt International School in Germany, I studied Graphic Design at Maidstone College of Art in the UK, then at the Royal College of Art in London. Returning to Australia and spending most of the 1980s working as art director in advertising, then various other creative endeavours, I decided the spontaneity of photography more suited to my temperament. Studying Graphic Design at Art College taught me conceptual thinking, a Diploma of Photography from Sydney TAFE Ultimo taught me photographic technique needed to successfully execute my concepts.
