EXPOSED is a showcase of contemporary South African artists working in photography. Working across varied themes, EXPOSED is an exploration of landscape, deeply layered experience, colonialism and race. Inspired and set against a background of a unique South African experience, the exhibition is a first for Sydney audiences and presents an international flavour to the Head On Photo Festival.

A highlight of the exhibition is the inclusion of high profile internationally renowned photographer ROGER BALLEN, Beginning by documenting the small dorps or villages of rural South Africa, Ballen’s photography moved on in the late 1980s and early 1990s to their inhabitants; through the late 1990s Ballen’s work progressed. By the mid 1990s his subjects began to act where previously his pictures, however troubling, fell firmly into the category of documentary photography, his work then moved into the realms of fiction. His fifth book ‘Outland’ produced by Phaidon Press in 2001 was the result.

In the fall of 2005, Phaidon press produced its second book by the artist, entitled ‘Shadow Chamber’. The book focuses on the interactions between the people, animals, and or objects that inhabit Ballen’s unique image space. Ballen’s recent work enters into a new realm of photography — the images are painterly and sculptural in ways not immediately associated with photographs. Ballen is trying to give with his arts a reflection on the psyche.

Through collaboration on some of South African music group Die Antwoord’s music videos Ballen’s evolving paintings and scuplture have gained broader exposure globally.

Roger Ballen, Barbara Wildenboer, Alistair Whitton, Brent Meistre, Gary Van Wyk, Melanie Cleary
