Integrating the absurdities of childhood sexual trauma is extremely difficult for survivors. There may be pretty things in view, such as flowers, while assault is occurring. This paradox is sometimes also the lifesaver. Prisoners of war have remembered beautiful blue skies as something that kept them alive, for example.
One method of facilitating the complex trauma integration process is art making. Art therapy gave me the tools to use visual language to express experiences and emotions that are verbally inexplicable or taboo.
This exhibition communicates my feelings and flashbacks by blending the macabre with the beautiful.
