‘Cut out’ is a photographic reaction prompted by Marnya Rothe’s immersion and research into the world of fashion photography, surrealism and gender politics. Essentially, her work could be described as ‘surrealist fashion photography, exploring the themes of gender roles and displacement.’ Marnya’s work aims to present a narrative within the structure of a fashion photograph. She is captivated by the ability of photographs to transport the viewer into a world where boundaries don’t exist and desire is strong; she aims to use these elements to characterise her work. The photographs, or dioramas, display vintage clad models placed in a dialogue with domestic objects. Marnya’s sense of fashion is very evident in the photographs, but perhaps what the viewer is more interested in, is the relationship between the woman and the object.
