The people of Sydney’s inner west are inspiring, diverse and creative: yet often their stories go unrecognized.
Marrickville Legal Centre is hosting a photo exhibition which celebrates local people’s victories in fighting for justice.
The exhibition “Champions of Social Justice (inner west)” will feature subjects like Derek Rees, who was a business leader until he suffered a serious injury in a bushwalking fall.
Derek lived in his car in Marrickville for four years, accruing fines, until getting the legal and non-legal support he needed.
The black and white photos of Derek are by inner west photographer Jodie Barker. Three other local photographers involved are Steven Siewert, Grant Turner and Valentina Penkova.
Marrickville Legal Centre is an independent, nonprofit community legal centre, which offers free legal advice and assistance to people experiencing economic and social disadvantage in the inner west, south-west and southern suburbs of Sydney – and beyond. The Centre also operates two statewide services, including a youth legal service.
Marrickville Legal Centre is grateful to the Inner West Council for selecting the exhibition through a competitive grants process. The funding comes from the NSW Government through the Stronger Communities Fund.
Four inner west photographers are part of this exhibition.
Steven Siewert is a Walkley award winning photographer, whose striking images were featured in Fairfax publications for many years.
Jodie Barker is a local artist whose work aims to delve into the physical, emotional and spiritual connections we have with the spaces that surround us.
Valentina Penkova was born in Russia and now lives in Sydney. She used to be a professional ballerina and brings a sense of whimsy to her work.
Grant Turner is a Walkley award winning photographer who cut his teeth in news photography. He has a diverse range, and has an established following on social media through Newtown Pix.
