The exhibition Ghosts is a photographic study of the former Gladesville Psychiatric Hospital. Within these images I have tried to capture the beauty and importance of this historic site in Northern Sydney. Some of the buildings now lie in a state of disrepair. I hope in time that it might be restored to its former beauty and utilised as a place for community gatherings and artistic endeavours.
Historically the Gladesville facility was established in 1838 and was one of the first sites in Sydney where patients received treatment rather than being confined to a cemetery for diseased intellects. In 1869 the name was changed to the Hospital for the Insane. In 1915 the facility became known as the Gladesville Mental Hospital. After an amalgamation in 1993 with Macquarie Hospital, North Ryde, the hospital’s inpatient services were transferred to the North Ryde site and in 1997 and the Gladesville facility was closed.
