Back in 2012 my good friend Sally took me to her home town of Boorowa. It is situated in the wheat sheep belt of South West NSW. The land in the area is known for its richness and fertility. There is a population of about 1200 including outlying villages. Now Sally’s family have lived in the area for six generations so are quite well known, and it was their connections to community and extended family that gave me the opportunity to spend time with some of the wonderful people living in this small town.

Geographically speaking Boorowa is indeed a small town but in every other aspect it was to me, larger than life. The people there made a lasting impression on me as an artist and as an individual. The generosity, kindness and openness of the people I met there was an experience I will never forget.

In my way of thanks I spent the day photographing their children at play. Some lived in regular homes and some on huge farming properties. It was amazing for me to see these kids inhabiting such giant playgrounds. So free to explore and create games in such beautifully vast Australian landscapes. For the most part I was a silent observer hanging back and catching moments as they happened. Not really seeing what I had captured until I went over the film at the end of the day.

When putting together this portraiture exhibition it became clear that the actual landscape of Boorowa had become an integral character. It simply had to be seen alongside the portraits. The place itself had a distinct personality that I believe has imprinted itself in the development of these amazing young people.

For Pine Street Gallery I have created a multimedia photographic installation . Playing with scale enables you the viewer to feel the larger than life personalities. While projected footage of the landscape puts you right there. Immersed in the space that these people inhabit but by no means are dwarfed by.

My thanks to the people of Boorowa and the young people who shared their day with me.
