As the shadows settle over the Blue Mountains, a different landscape emerges. Sunlight disappears from the sky and the subtle illumination of stars and moon are revealed. Light itself becomes the subject, from the glow of moonlight on cliffs to the harsh glare of headlights snaking their way up the Great Western Highway. In these dark places there exists a geometry of shadow and light.
‘Blue in Black: mountains by night’ is the next chapter in my personal project to document the urban and natural environment of the Blue Mountains. These images capture my curiosity and inner reflections about the unique place I call home. I find a nagging sense of danger and edginess sitting alongside the serenity of the night. These dark images depict absence; the absence of people, animals, familiar landmarks. What is left once these reference points have been stripped away?
