Blood on the Rice Field
This photography project delves into the island of Sumba, Indonesia, revealing its rich tapestry of religious practices, ancient rituals, and sacrificial ceremonies. After spending two weeks on the island, Anastasi formed relationships with local tribes and was invited to participate and photograph. The photos explore the spiritual life of the Sumbanese people, highlighting their devotion, communal gatherings, and the profound significance of their traditions.
Key moments include the Pasola festival, a thrilling spear-fighting event symbolizing the harmony between humans and nature, and various aspects of tribal life that showcase the community’s deep-rooted customs and social structures. From the intricate Marapu beliefs to the colorful rituals that mark life’s milestones, this series offers a visual journey into a world where spirituality and daily life are deeply intertwined.
Tim Anastasi
Tim Anastasi discovered film at a very early age in his suburban family home. Born to migrant parents, his works are heavily influenced by the multicultural experience that defined Sydney’s Inner West. After graduating with a B.A. in Fine Arts in Performance, Installation, and Culture at the College of Fine Arts, he traveled to New York, where he developed a familiarity with analogue photography.
In recent years, Anastasi has developed a unique film style that blends cinema vérité and fantasy. His work reflects his love for storytelling and the cultural background that shapes him as an artist.
