The birdsong is deafening

The Birdsong is Deafening is an ongoing body of work that contemplates the endlessly shifting landscape between memory, loss and place.
It reflects upon my relationship with my hometown of Gimuy (Cairns) and the liminal experience of growing up with a multicultural identity: on my mother’s side, the deep quiet of Scandinavia, and on my father’s, the fragments of old Yugoslavia.
I used my camera to trace over the residue of memory, beginning as a solitary meditation on places I explored as a child and becoming a collaboration with both land and loved ones. I found solace in narrating a fragment of my own story and invite you to recall your longings, to create a dialogue between worlds both real and imagined, familiar and unfamiliar, here and there.
Living and working between Naarm (Melbourne) and Gimuy (Cairns), Teva Cosic’s art navigates intergenerational experiences of migration, feelings of cultural displacement and the role of nostalgia in maintaining connections to our pasts.
Cosic’s work is informed by her mixed Swedish and Croatian background and takes an expanded approach to image-making, generating new ways for art to visualise and understand these themes.
