Beads For Every Life Story

Marilyn Monroe once famously said ‘Diamonds are a girl’s best friend’. Turns out that the infinite amounts of beads and ornaments are best friends, both for women and men, if you are part of the ancient tribes in Africa.
I was fascinated by the stories arranged in elaborative patterns and combinations of jewellery proudly worn by individuals. I was intrigued to find out that the colours, designs and placements on the body and outfits were a narrative of their lives indicating a person’s age, expression of social status, marital rank, reproductive readiness, important role and celebratory events.
Interestingly, unusual-looking scar patterns and motifs were also an expression of individuality and life experiences. No matter how little or how much each person wears, nothing is taken off, as if to say: tribal people are completely inseparable with their heritage and identity.
