KATRIN KOENNING – YOU CAN ALWAYS SEE ORION
Sitting almost exactly on the celestial equator, Orion can be seen from anywhere in the world (except, at times, the Antarctic). In a migrant existence, the idea of a shared sky – one that defies borders – is of great comfort. A work in progress, You can Always see Orion traces fragments of personal trajectories across three generations, five countries and four continents.
ALAN HILL – FLY IN, FLY OUT
FIFO entered the Australian vocabulary, along with debates about its social impact. But it doesn’t just apply to mining, nor is it limited to people living in Australian cities while working in the interior – there are also much less talked about international forms of FIFO that see Pacific Islanders working on Australian farms. But is this mutually beneficial or a form of exploitation?
KELLY HUSSEY-SMITH – OCCASIONALLY, AS THE LIGHT CHANGES AT THE END OF THE DAY
Over 500,000 children grew up in, or spent time in out-of-home-care in Australia during the 20th Century. Through collaborations with four care leavers, “Occasionally, as the Light Changes at the End of the Day”, explores the legacy and impacts of this experience.
A FINE BALANCE – TANJA BRUCKNER
This work follows the lives of two migrant men in their 60’s as they balance the cultural residues of a homeland from long ago but not forgotten, with the expectations and desires of modern Australia.
KALO FAINU – API TONGA
Some have traveled across the seas, making new homes in a foreign land.
Others have never been back to the Islands, born and raised on Aussie soil.
Many miles of ocean lie between Australia and Tonga, but links to culture and traditional remain strong and are evident in the homes of Australia’s Tongan community.
