116 Years
In 2017, June Wall decided to sell her house. It had been in her family since 1901 when It was purchased by Alfred Lutwyche, her grandfather.
My name is Mike Wall, her son. I felt a strong desire to document the last days of ownership for our family. With June’s permission, I started photographing the place I had lived in for over half my life. I decided to use the opportunity to attempt something new, unique and possibly original.
The house sold and June, a financially cautious woman, was hesitant to find a new place to live until she had more certainty.
In early October, she visited a small unit that caught her attention. Close to shops and the doctor, it seemed ideal. On her way home, she suffered a stroke.
It is left to me to tell the story of this place. I remember George Lutwyche, my grandfather, telling stories of the last aboriginal inhabitant of the area and his sad life. I remember George telling fisherman’s tales and life on the harbour. I remember the chickens he kept and the large garden he maintained that continued to be a huge part of our lives. I remember neighbours, past and present, famous and anonymous. I remember a very fortunate life lived in a unique and sheltered home.
My intention is to create a book of photos I have taken for family and friends, filled out with memories from the family album. I am a landscape photographer so this is the eye I bring to the project.

Mike Wall is a landscape photographer. He has completed a diploma at NADC, Kingswood. In 2017, he had his first solo exhibition, Cloud Watching On Country Roads, at Rex-Livingston gallery in Katooomba in association with Head On 2017. His new work, 116 Years is a work in progress. One image from this series was chosen as a finalist for Head On Landscape prize in 2018. I have been a photographer for 30 years.
