This panel will feature photographers who put communities in focus. Ilana Rose and David Schalliol will speak about their sociological photography that seek to capture the often unseen inner-workings of communities showing their resilience, strength and change.

Ilana Rose

Ilana Rose is a professional photographer and photojournalist. Her work has appeared in the Age, the Sydney Morning Herald, Marie Claire and others, and was exhibited at Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum. Her book This Chicken Life was released in 2019. 

David Schalliol

As well as an internationally acclaimed photographer, David Schalliol is an Associate Professor of Sociology at St. Olaf College (Minnesota), interested in the relationship between people and place. He is the author of Isolated building studies (UTAKATADO) and co-author with Michael Carriere of The City Creative (University of Chicago Press).
