Mirrors and windows is inspired by John Szarkowski’s concept that photographs fall somewhere on the continuum “from public to private concerns” or ‘mirrors and windows’.
While he developed this concept from Minor White’s idea that all photographs are self-portraits, Szarkowski could see that many photographers were trying to document and record the world for what they believed it was.
We believe we can shed light on contemporary photographic practice by revisiting the concepts proposed by Szarkowski and explored in that seminal exhibition.
