At the heart of Head On Photo Festival are the Head On Photo Awards, spanning Portrait, Landscape, Student and the brand-new Environmental by Australian Geographic categories, judged each year by a diverse panel of Australian and international photography industry leaders, from creators to curators.

Head On’s philosophy hinges upon the belief that all artists should receive equal opportunities to gain exposure to their work. Valuing merit and inclusivity, the judging panel selects finalists and winners through a blind judging process in which artists’ names are hidden – ensuring a uniquely unbiased selection process.

While providing photo-based artists with invaluable prospects to exhibit in Sydney, online and internationally, Head On has awarded artists over $800,000 in cash and prizes on a global scale since 2004 and has toured the exhibitions internationally.

The Head On Photo Awards have sky-rocketed several talented photographers’ careers and helped develop and expand the photographic medium worldwide.

The Head On Portrait Awards (est. 2004) is a prestigious competition that recognizes the talents of portrait photographers at all career stages. Head On awards prizes to artists who demonstrate a unique visual literacy of portraiture and innovative approaches to the traditional portrait form, expanding our idea of what a portrait can be.

Images submitted to the Head On Portrait Awards must feature or reflect the essence of a person or group of people and must be photographed by the Applicant.  We encourage all photographic styles and interpretations of photographic portraiture and accept group portraits, self-portraits and collages.

The Head On Landscape Awards (est. 2013) celebrate innovation in landscape photography. The selected finalists encompass landscape photographers who push the boundaries of landscape as a visual genre and explore how we navigate the spaces we inhabit and those that exclude us.

Our approach to ‘landscape’ is very broad and encompasses ‘large vista’ images of the natural environment (land or sea), urban or industrial settings. It may include people, but these should be ‘incidental’ rather than the main subject matter. We encourage all photographic styles and interpretations of ‘landscape’.

The inaugural Head On Environmental Awards by Australian Geographic is a celebration of the power of photography to inspire action and drive positive change for our planet. The Head On Environmental Awards by Australian Geographic is a unique bracket within the roster of Head On Photo Awards categories, dedicated to presenting and celebrating timely images that capture and provoke reflection on our world and our place in it. Make your picture make a difference!
