Sophie Howarth

Anthropology through photography

Since the invention of photography, the camera has been used to document, study, and preserve all kinds of things. This year’s Festival features many artists who use their art as a form of study to capture humanity in all its forms. In times of celebration, perseverence and change – these photographers explore what it means to be human.

Tim Smith’s In the world but not if it, documents the life of the Hutterites in Canada and North America and their interaction with modern technologies. Ha Aretz: The Promised Land photographed by Roger Grasas is a highly researched body of work that captures locations where holy events in the old and new testaments supposedly took place. This is an in-depth study of the Holy Land – a land contested by Israelis and Palestinian that is important to several religions such as Islam, Judaism, Christianity, and Baha’i. Sophie Howarth’s anthropologic study centres around women in the music industry – the women who make it and the women who love it. Homage to chicks is a collection of images taken between 1990 and 2012 that places women in the centre of music history.

Join us 11am, 5 November at Bondi Pavilion for Anthropology through photography!
