Artist Talk – Grayson Cooke
Date: 12 May 2020
Time: 11:00am
Locations: Online
Cost: Free, donations welcome
In this talk, I will discuss the art and science of satellite data and multi-spectral imaging – how satellite images are produced, used and processed, and how I use them in my art. And, because organisations like NASA and ESA make their satellite data freely available, I will also discuss how YOU can get access to this data; where to find it, and what to do with it when you’ve got it.

I am a media artist who uses satellite data to produce startling still images and timelapse video of the Australian landscape from space. I work with Geoscience Australia and the Digital Earth Australia satellite-imaging platform to extract and process high-resolution multi-spectral images of the Australian environment. And specifically, I work with the cloud-filtering algorithms used by geoscientists to remove clouds from their data; by inverting the algorithms I make the incredible beauty and variety of clouds my focus, making art out of the “invalid data” deemed useless for scientific purposes.
